Tour of Estonia comes with a brand new stage

This year’s Tour of Estonia (UCI 2.1) will start on the 23rd of May. Traditionally the tour has had two stages, but this time the road race will kick off with a new and fascinating prologue.

Having now three stages, it means that the Tour of Estonia 2019 will take place from 23rd to 25th of May. Last time the Tour of Estonia took place as a three day event was on the tour’s first year in 2013 when there also was a prologue in Tallinn. This year’s prologue brings cyclists to the iconic Song Festival Grounds.

„The prologue’s course is very interesting because of its variety: there is a fast and straight section, steep climb, fast descents and technical turns,“ Race Director Indrek Kelk said. „One of the main reason, why we added it to the programme was to make the tour more interesting. And ’cause the caps will open up after the prologue, the two longer stages should be quite aggressive this year with cyclists being more active during them,“ he added.

In addition to the prologue on the streets of Tallinn (3,7 km), the tour will have two well-known stages:

  • Tallinn-Tartu GP (187 km): A stage with quite an easy profile, where the cyclists ride from Estonia’s capital (Tallinn) to the second biggest city (Tartu);
  • Tartu GP (173 km): Tour of Estonia’s final stage on a 9,6 km loop with two steep, but fast and powerful climbs, both will be taken 18 times.

As of now the tour’s line-up has 15 teams in it: 2 Pro-Continental teams, 8 Continental teams and 5 national teams. One of the two Pro-Continental teams registered is Estonian national champion Mihkel Räim’s home club Israel Cycling Academy, the other is US team Novo Nordisk. Final line-up will be confirmed in the middle of May.

On Sunday, 26th of May the biggest road cycling race in Eastern Europe, the 38th Tartu Road Race (or Tartu Rattaralli), will take place. The Tartu Road Race is not part of the Tour of Estonia, being a separate 124/56 km race with close to 4000 participants. Many pro cyclists from the Tour of Estonia will also take part in Tartu Road Race.
