The first stage of the Tour of Estonia 2014 was won by Eduard Michael Grosu

The first stage of the Tour of Estonia 2014, the 190 km long race from Tallinn to Tartu, was won in a group finish by Romanian Eduard Michael Grosu from Vini Fantini Nippo team. The best Estonian, Risto Raid from the National Team Estonian, finished as 11th.

Grosu said their goal was set for the sprint finish. “The whole team worked for me during the race and the last sprint was a success,” said Grosu. “Tomorrow we will definitely defend our leader’s jersey. I don’t know the course, but I will get to know it if I ride it for 12 times,” he added.

At the beginning of the stage, a group of 8 cyclists started to lead, one of them was Estonian Endrik Puntso. “We remained in front and I also tried to get the sprint victory, but I didn’t succeed,” said Puntso. In some places, the leading group had about 4 minute lead.

The race director Indrek Kelk said, in general, the stage went very calm, but there were some unexpected cases as well. “At first, we had a minor crash with three team cars. Fortunately, only cars got some damages,” said Kelk. “The second unexpected case was the finish, where there was a crash among cyclists. Maybe it is a clear sign that Tour of Estonia is now a serious race, even with some serious crashes before the finish line”.

From the crash, the Estonian national team member, Martin Laas got away easy and walked over the finish line with his bike next to him. Not so happy ending was for the Baku team member Daniel Klemmel, who needed medical help.

The second stage of the Tour of Estonia 2014 takes place tomorrow, on May 31st. Then, the 150km long Tartu Grand Prix will be held on Tartu city streets.
